Weekend of 8 August
2010.
Eish ! Last Monday saw Guru forecasting
a long weekend of wind. Inevitably, as Murphy's
law of forecasting dictates, the forecast moved
out by one or two days. Sunday was meant to blow
11 knots westerly but nothing happened - not even
enough for a Formula board and 9 sq.m sail !
But as it turned out, we had
history in the making - the first public holiday
in living memory which was blessed with wind !
Monday held promise for a good session with Guru
forecasting 20 knots westerly. Must have been
an all-time record number of sacrificial sailors
which contributed to this wonderful state of affairs
- Johan on a DW, Pieter in Nellies, Julian and
Gabi returning from Mauritius. Thanks okes.
Arrived at Dronks at 11h30 and
the wind was already up to 18 knots westerly.
The dam surface full of glorious white caps and
one or two sails darting across the surface. Yee-hah.
Wind settled at around 20 knots with
the odd 25 knot gust. Good enough to be powered
up all the time on a 115 liter board and 6.2 sq.m
sail. I left early due to the sniffles but the
blokes noted that the wind changed to SW at 2PM
and remained at a constant
20 knots. So there it is - early August winds.
Happy sailors included Glyn, Donovan, Sean, Lourens,
Jeremy and me. Not so happy sailor was Gary who
left his small kit at home 'cause he thought the
wind wasn't blowing.
He ended up getting klapped on his formula board,
8.5 sq.m sail and 700 fin ! Good news is that
the water is relatively warm, no booties required
(Gabi!).
So who says old kit is crap ?
Lourens went out on his 1995 edition F2 Sputnik
105 and 1998 Pryde race sail, promptly clocking
28 knots on his GPS up at the speed strip.
Who is the oke who doesn't answer
his phone the whole weekend only to SMS everyone
on Tuesday morning that there's 20 knots (of ice-cold
ice-cream
headache easterly wind) and who wants to go for
a sail......And where was Gunter this weekend
- while some of us had money to spend he was galavanting
around Slaapies in the pursuit, no doubt, of satisfying
his carnal desires - they do have singles clubs
in Joeys too you know.
Till next time then....
Cheers
Malcolm
